April at Sun Lakes Rotary

Every year in April, the Sun Lakes Rotary Club holds a Speech Contest for students from the five Chandler High Schools. This year is no different. On Tuesday, April 3, students from Chandler, Hamilton, Basha, Perry and Casteel High Schools will address how the Rotary Four-Way Test might be applied to their lives or the lives of others (and especially to their peer groups): Is It the Truth, Is It Fair to All Concerned, Is It Beneficial to All Concerned? This is the core of Rotarian beliefs.

Speeches are five to seven minutes in length and are delivered from memory or extemporaneously. Judges will be from the Rotary District and our local club. There are prizes for participants.

On Tuesday, April 10, Herb Zinn will talk about “A Company of Heroes.” Zinn holds a Bachelor of Arts cum laude degree from Adelphi University where he majored in history, before embarking on a 40-year-long law practice in the field of utility and energy law.

His first and true passion is military history. He has written various articles on topics of interest relating to World War II and has been a visiting lecturer at Scottsdale Community College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College on topics related to military history and the role of military aviation in modern-day combat.

On Tuesday, April 17, a special event will be held at the Alamo Draft House (Chandler Heights and Arizona) for “Dinner and a Movie.” The price will be $25. The movie is a comedy – totally politically correct – with no off-color language (that alone should have everyone wanting to be there). If you wish to participate along with Rotary, please contact Peter Meade at 480-600-2458.

On Tuesday, April 24, the club will hear from Paola Boivin who is on the College Football Playoff Committee. Boivin is an Arizona State University professor and Arizona Sports Hall of Fame inductee. She was recently selected as one of six new members to serve on the College Football Playoff selection committee; she is the second woman in history to work on this elite panel.

The 13-person committee will be responsible for selecting the top four teams in the playoff and assigning them to semifinal games, as well as placing the next group of teams in the remaining New Year’s bowls. Boivin previously served as President of the Association for Women in Sports Media and in November, 2017, was the first female journalist to be inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame.

The Rotary Club of Sun Lakes meets for breakfast every Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. in the Oakwood Country Club Ballroom. The meetings start at 7:00 a.m. and end promptly at 8:00 a.m. Cost of breakfast is $13. To make reservations for any meeting, contact Rotarian Peter Meade at 480-600-2458. For Sun Lakes residents, if you want to know more about the club, contact Charles Loew at 602-721-3680. SunBird residents should contact Walt Mills at 480-883-8007.
