Classes for better movement

Noell Hyman

I can’t tell you how excited I was when one of my Sun Lakes students this week showed me how much higher she can raise an arm that’s been giving her difficulty, just a few weeks after she started taking class.

Our joints need two things to keep their proper mobility: Movement and compression. Yoga takes care of both. In our Yoga with a Chair classes, we typically sit in a chair through most of the class to focus on moving and compressing every joint, one or two of them at a time in every direction. My Chair students often tell me how loose and free they feel at the end of class.

In Gentle Strengthening Yoga, we do active full-body movements that require more focus on achieving strength and balance, but the movement and compression of just about every joint also typically happens within a single class. Some of my students recently joked that they must be addicted, because they feel so much better on days they come to this class, and they notice a big difference on days when we don’t have it.

The demands of this class vary between the two teachers, so if one class is more intense than you want or not intense enough, please talk to us so we can guide you to the class that has the right type of movement for you. I have had a student take the Chair class as a warmup and then immediately follow it with Gentle Strengthening (they are back-to-back on Wednesdays and Fridays).

Restorative Yoga may or may not hit every single joint. It targets the hips and spine more than the others, but it is extremely healing (and restorative!) for those particular joints. If you have a lot of healing to do, this is a great one (with the doctor’s approval). One student told me she had been struggling to walk before she became a regular Restorative student. Well, she’s walking nicely now, and she attributes that to coming to class regularly. This class is also wonderful if you need to calm your mind or nervous system, so don’t feel like it’s not for you if you don’t have anything that needs a lot of healing.
