Gila Butte Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), commemorated Constitution Week with support to schools with public exhibits and with two bellringing programs in senior communities. Constitution Week is an annual event celebrated nationally during the week of September 17-23. By law, each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year is required to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution for its students.

In support of local schools, Gila Butte DAR delivered 100 Constitution posters to the Chandler Unified School District, plus posters and study materials to Kyrene schools. Also, libraries and community centers were provided with Constitution displays, including the Robson Library.

For the third year, DAR sponsored a Constitution program with a bellringing at Renaissance Retirement Community, followed by a second bellringing in the Renaissance Assisted Living Facility. DAR is proud to serve all age groups in the community.

The tradition of celebrating Constitution Week began when DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 for the observation of Constitution Week. The resolution was adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower into Public Law #915 on August 2, 1956.

“The Constitution is a living document,” said DAR Constitution Chair Carolyn Hawkins. “It assures each citizen of the freedoms Americans cherish and appreciate. As members of the DAR, we are happy to keep our ancestors’ legacy alive by promoting their ideals.”

Gila Butte DAR meets in Sun Lakes and welcomes membership inquiries; call 480-802-6993 or go to the Chapter website, gilabutte.arizonadar.org.
