Don’t let your brain power go to waste for one more day! Join more than 500 of your neighbors and friends who are keeping their little gray cells active and challenged through a variety of non-credit courses offered by New Adventures in Learning, located right here in the neighborhood.

Pat Gula, a long-time New Adventures volunteer who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, offers this observation, “It is no longer news that our brains need help to continue to work well as we age but it seems they also need social stimulation. New Adventures is a valuable community resource because it provides this kind of environment for area residents.”

Pat has enjoyed the friends she has made through her involvement as a member of the New Adventures family. “Friendships develop by chatting with seatmates before or after classes or during breaks, and while working together on joint projects that allow the organization to serve our community in such a meaningful way.”

We agree with Pat completely! While the fall semester is already underway, new classes begin every week so it’s not too late to join in the fun and excitement of learning while making new friends. Here is just a sample of classes still to come this fall:

The Geological Story of Our Valley: Learn how, where and when the mountains and the ground we live on developed and are still developing. This class includes a field trip to view the many wonderful geological points of interest around the Valley!

Sherman’s March to the Sea: Are you a history buff or simply want to learn more about the American Civil War? This class will focus on Sherman’s march to the sea from Atlanta to Savannah which resulted in a much earlier end to the war.

Flute from the Yucca Plant-Native American Style: Learn how to make a Native American style flute from the yucca plant with simple hand tools, and learn the basic principles of playing the flute, too!

A Look Inside Biosphere 2: What were some of the challenges in designing, building and living inside Biosphere 2? Biospherian Linda Leigh will discuss her experiences in the early days of design and construction, and what it was like to live inside this closed system for two years.

New Adventures also offers roundtable discussions, hands-on computer labs and field trips to local sites each semester. The complete curriculum guide can be viewed online at www.newadventures.info.
