Line Dancing with Judee

Judee Curtis

New Saying: “Time flies even when we aren’t dancing!” Completing registrations for new dancers has me excited, so I’m getting organized, learning new dances, getting the playlist ready, plus emailing the dancers: “Line Dancing with Judee restarts on Monday, September 9, in the SunBird Ballroom.”

If you are new and want to join us, you must call 480-802-0201 after 10:00 a.m. Be sure to start your message with “I’m interested in Line Dancing,” so I won’t block unknown numbers and names. You will be registering for the Ultra Basics Class on Mondays at 11:30 a.m. for $2 for an hour. There is an October 15 deadline for registering. If you miss that one, you can register for January 6, 2020, when we restart after the holidays.

You will learn and dance at your first class with new dances added throughout our fall session. Because it is harder and you probably will never learn dances, “following” is discouraged. I take pride in the fact that I really do teach dancers what they are doing with their feet by using consistent words for steps and patterns in the dances taught.

Line dance etiquette isn’t usually addressed but is necessary every so often: You don’t teach line dances on the floor of a scheduled dance unless it is being taught by the band or a person in “control of the floor.” Line dances are learned in classes. This particular statement can also be used for tennis, golf, bridge, etc. If one is really interested in an activity, you must go through the same process as those who have been in it for years. You don’t just “step into that activity”! I don’t teach the dances danced at scheduled dances unless convinced by my dancers to do so.

Dances taught in my classes are chosen from thousands written with easy patterns and newer, more difficult patterns. Introduction to syncopation is at a pace so dancers can accomplish what has been taught. We have three levels of dancers, and the three classes are in the SunBird Ballroom from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. God bless line dancing!
