Where did the summer go? It seems it was just the first of May and already it is time to think about kids and grandkids going back to school. But wait a minute. School isn’t just for kids anymore. Adult learning programs allow adults to keep in the loop and understand the world their kids and grandkids are experiencing. This is the time for you to jump in and expand your world and your knowledge base. And I know just the program for you, New Adventures in Learning.

New Adventures is an adult learning program for older learners in Sun Lakes, SunBird, Solera and the surrounding areas. Affiliated with the Chandler-Gilbert Community College and conveniently located at Riggs Road and Alma School, New Adventures offers a wide range of classes to its members. Examples of some of the 90 classes that will be offered in the fall of 2016 include The Lincoln of Literature, Arizona 101, Making Sense of Medicare, Modern Korea and the Hidden Treasures of Korean Art, Sights to See in Southern and Western Arizona, and Coping with Grief during the Holidays. One of the classes enters your medical history on a flash drive which you keep on your person in case of an emergency.

Classes are presented by volunteers who come from the membership and the community at large. Presenters may be retired experts in the field and others who have a keen interest in their topic. Classes are so diverse there is something for everyone wanting to continue learning. Classes are set up for year round residents and snowbirds. If you have never attended college but love to learn, New Adventures is for you.

Since its beginning in 1998 more than 500 seniors have joined. Annual membership dues are $50, which allows members to register for as many classes as they wish. There is an additional $15 college registration fee for each semester a member is actively enrolled in classes.

If you are an older adult who wants to keep your brain healthy, if you would like to meet other dynamic seniors who have a wide range of interests, and if you want to keep up with the younger generation New Adventures is for you. Please stop by for a visit at 25105 South Alma School Road or call 480-857-5500. You can also visit our website at www.newadventures.info.

Fall registration begins on  September 6.
