Noted neurologist coming to Sun Lakes March 10

We hear it all the time – “Growing old is not for sissies” – or “I just had a senior moment! Sometimes it feels like our middle name should be “forgetful”! We forget to purchase what we went to the store for in the first place. We forget to take our medication. We forget to return a phone call. And we don’t like to talk about it because of the dreaded diagnosis – “Dementia” or worse!

To help us face this important and, yes, nagging senior citizen issue, Sun Lakes Community Church has invited Dr. Stephen Flitman to come to Sun Lakes on Saturday, March 10, 2018. His presentation is titled Alzheimers, Dementia and Other Forms of Memory Loss. The event is free, but pre-registration is required. Registration deadline is March 4. The seminar will take place in the Navajo Room in the Sun Lakes Country Club from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

In reading about it, I discovered that Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in America, costing more than cancer and heart disease. In 2017, the direct costs to American society of caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias will total an estimated $259 billion. But it is not the same as Dementia which refers to the whole class of conditions characterized by loss of memory, confused thought processes and agitation. It is a slow process of mental derangement that strips sufferers of their memory, personality and eventually their humanity. It is a progressive, neuro-degenerative disorder that is incurable and irreversible. But new treatments are being developed and revealed every year.

Sun Lakes Community Church’s Pastor Jerry McGhee said, “I am looking forward to this helpful and practical event. Dr. Flitman will speak from his vast experience, as well as along with his team conduct some memory tests and help us learn how to better understand memory loss – and how to cope with it.”

To pre-register – and the deadline is March 4 – email [email protected] or call the church office at 480-895-9147. Anyone experiencing memory loss – or who has a loved one struggling with memory-loss – is urged to attend.

Sun lakes Community Church meets each Sunday in the Sun Lakes Chapel, across from the Sun lakes Country Club. The service is at 9:30 a.m. The church office phone is 480-895-9147. The website is www.sunlakescommunitychurch.org.
