Restless Minds explore Lotto mania

One thing and one thing only seemed to break through the incessant drumbeat of the recent political campaign – Lotto mania.

At its December meeting, the Restless Minds discussion group will explore government-sponsored lotteries from several different angles.

The group will meet at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 11, in the Sewing Room of Oakwood’s Arts & Crafts Center. Restless Minds is open to all people with inquisitive minds. There are no fees or signup requirements. Just show up and participate in the discussion.

Lotto mania reached a fever pitch in mid-October when winning tickets in both Mega Millions and Powerball eluded buyers for several months. First prize in Mega Millions reached $1.6 billion before a single winning ticket was sold. Then, on October 27, two people had winning tickets in the $688 million Powerball jackpot. (Powerball had its own $1.6 billion prize in early 2016.)

What would you do if you won a nine- or ten-figure jackpot? How would you spend it? Would how you spend it now differ significantly with how you might have handled a winning ticket in your 20s or 30s? Did you know that you can play lotto online on the 파워볼사이트 and potentially win some money there?

The group will explore those questions but will also look at some of the darker aspects of public lotteries. Are they ethical? Do they prey on those who can least afford to gamble money? And why does it seem that an unusually large percentage of lottery winners waste much or all of their winnings in a relatively short time?
