In my lifetime, I have experienced fear — real fear — on several occasions. Many years ago, I was hunting with my father and uncle in the shadow of Mt. St. Helen in Washington State and I got lost. I had a compass, but for reasons that I still do not understand, I did not trust it, so I wandered around waist-deep in wet ferns becoming more afraid by the minute.

After what seemed an eternity, I stumbled onto a logging road and flagged down two men in an old beat-up pickup truck. They pointed in the right direction and told me to trust my compass. An hour later, I stumbled onto the right road and found my uncle. Of course, I didn’t let him know I had been lost, but I think he knew it anyway.

Today, there are a lot of reasons to be fearful … the economy, the potential for terrorist attacks here at home, unexpected health problems and many other issues, but I would like to encourage you to look to Proverbs 3:5, 6 as I have for years. I believe that God is the Sovereign of all we know and all we think we know. If we place our trust in Him, His promise is to “make our paths straight.” But God’s promises are broader than just a “straight path;” His promises include protection, provision and peace.

Over the next months, we are going to see great changes in our country and perhaps reasons to fear, but trust God; He is Sovereign and He keeps His promises.
