Sun Lakes Garden Club welcomes back Jim Anderson

Starla Kramer

Dr. Jim Anderson is a Professor Emeritus in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy at ASU. He received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology. Much of his research is the effects of air pollution, and he has participated in a series of international climate experiments throughout the world, including East Asia, and has lectured and conducted research many times in Japan, South Korea and China. He is also a collector of East Asian antiques and art.

Jim has been a member of the Phoenix Rose Society for 30 years and is current president. He is also an active exhibitor in local rose shows with focus on rose arrangements in the oriental and modern styles. In his frequent international travels, photography of local gardens and flower shows has become an additional hobby. Jim’s presentation to the Sun Lakes Garden Club members in September was “Scottish Castles and Gardens” from the 1500s to 1800s.

On May 15, he’ll share “Japanese Temples and Tea Gardens.” The spotlight will be on tea gardens and temple gardens in the old Japanese capital cities of Kyoto and Nara. Some time will also be spent on the connection between classical tea gardens and Japanese flower arranging.

Meetings are held year-around on the third Tuesday of each month at the Chapel Center (next to the All Faiths Church across from the Sun Lakes Country Club), 9230 E. Sun Lakes Blvd. South. Socializing, greeting visitors and refreshments starts at 9:30 a.m. followed by the meeting from 10:00-11:45 a.m.

Visitors are always welcome. Call Starla Kramer for questions at 480-540 8080.
