What do Kermit the Frog and Harry Potter have in common? Modern Waltz songs! Kermit’s “Rainbow Connection” and “Neville’s Waltz” from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire are lovely songs for waltzing the night away with the Sun Lakes Sunday Dance Club.

The elegant waltz, a dance beloved by today’s ballroom dancers, appeared in its modern form in England in the early nineteenth century. At the time, the waltz was shocking to polite society because of the closed hold dance frame. Now, the popular waltz is guaranteed to fill ballroom dance floors, as it does at every Sunday night dance.

Waltz etiquette involves a traveling line of dance, which has been a ballroom rule for the safety of all dancers. In progressive waltz, couples dance counter-clockwise around a rectangular floor following the line of dance. Those who prefer to dance the waltz box, a more stationary style of dance, should take the middle of the dance floor.

Corollaries to the line of dance relate to floorcraft, the art of traversing the dance floor without bumping into people. These include common-sense constraints, such as not walking across the dance floor while others are dancing and taking extended conversations off the active dance floor.

What’s your favorite ballroom dance? At the Sun Lakes Sunday Dance Club, you’ll enjoy other smooth ballroom dances like foxtrot, tango and quickstep plus Latin and rhythm dances including cha-cha, rhumba, East and West Coast swing, as well as surprises from the band. Polka? Samba? Two-Step? You can dance them all!
