Sun Lakes Women’s Association wins CBS Channel 5 “Pay It Forward” award

The Sun Lakes Women’s Association was surprised when we learned we won the CBS Channel 5 news “Pay it Forward” award. The Sun Lakes Fire Department nominated our association for everything we’ve donated over the years. They are our charity of choice, and we’ve donated over $500,000 to them. After all, we began 43 years ago as the Sun Lakes Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary and they are our heroes! But the firefighters went above and beyond to nominate us, saying they felt we always “had their backs,” and they could count on us for anything. The award brought a check for $500 and a great interview on the news. The story ran twice on Channel 5; on Thursday, April 13, and Saturday, April 15. All we can say is, Thank You! It’s just a pleasure to help.

April 10 was the spring luncheon – a picnic this year at the Oasis Pool. About 50 ladies attended, about half of our membership. While meetings and work groups and donations continue over the summer, things do slow down. Approximately one-third of our members are snowbirds, so there were many goodbyes at the luncheon.

The Women’s Association just completed its spring sale, and all we can say is Thank You! Thanks for the donations you made that give us product to sell. Thanks to all the volunteers who moved it from storage and sold it in the east parking lot of SLCC. And thanks to all who came and bought nearly everything we had! And all that will just add to the total we donate back to the Sun Lakes communities all year.

If you would like to get involved with this great group, please check us out online at SLWomens.org. Here you can see our history, request a donation pickup or learn about joining us. You can also come to the Sun Lakes CC Arts and Crafts Room any Monday morning from 9:00-11:00 a.m., even through the summer, for a visit. There are always coffee, snacks and some friendly fun ladies to visit with.
