Sunday Dance Club celebrating 30 years

John Yu

Come join our anniversary celebration (with CAKE … LOL) at our January dance on Sunday, January 20, 2019. I’ve been asked how our dance club made it this long. Well, I think more and more retirees are starting to enjoy dancing, not just for pleasure but for health reasons as well. Look at all the dancing venues around Sun Lakes these days. We might have been the first and only dance club 30 years ago, but now every restaurant, every sub-association is providing weekly bands and areas to dance. But for the Sunday Dance Club, its draw has always been based upon its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Almost equally important, our ballroom is configured in a way to allow plenty of “space” to dance. I know there’s nothing worse than bumping into someone at every turn while you’re trying to dance. We also enjoy a diverse group. Dancers range from beginners to seasoned. Our ages range from 40s to 90s. Some try to dance most dances, while many enjoy conversing and just watching the dancers. Every song played is danceable for couples. Our bands never play too loudly as to drown out conversations on the sidelines. Our dress code is not formal but a “club casual,” representing the taste and maturity of our community instead of a bar scene. That’s why the Sunday Dance Club made it through all these years.

We continue to enhance our dance experience each year. We continue to adapt the new demographics of Sun Lakes while not giving up our long-held beliefs and traditions. Dinner can now be ordered at each dance on the ballroom floor. One can truly make it a total “evening out of dining and dancing.” Our free dance lessons prior to the dance typically help the beginners to get a running start, but experienced dancers equally enjoy the contents of the class too. We now accommodate any large groups that wish to come to our dance as a group. A new group is our “55+ Dance Group.” It’s a fun group of dancers of all ages, with or without dance partners. They enjoy dancing with everyone. So if you come alone, here is a group of dancers who will fill your dance card for the evening. We are an “open” dance club, so anyone can walk in to any one of our Sunday evening dances without an invitation. Dinner may be ordered between 5:00 and 7:30 p.m. Free dance class begins 5:30 p.m., followed by music and dancing from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Cash bar is available. Admission is $25 for visiting guest couples or $12.50 if paying for yourself. (Parties of eight or greater call ahead for group guest discounts or table reservations. Call 480-699-7334.)
