The Hinge Pin of History

Pastor Jerry McGhee

My grandfather was born in 1876 and lived to be 97 years old. He witnessed enormous change in the world and in our society. He was not a well-educated man and experienced many disappointments in his lifetime. I doubt he could have listed many of the great historical events in human history, yet this very common man knew about and responded to the most important event in all of human history. My grandfather became a follower of Jesus Christ in his late 80s.

I suppose I am in error when I said “Event,” for what I am referring to is the series of events that took place over a period of about 100 hours that changed the course of history. One Hundred hours that fulfilled the eternal purpose of God. One hundred hours that gave hope to a hopeless world.

The fact is, Jesus of Nazareth was seized, tried, put to death, buried and rose from the dead all within those 100 hours and, as a result, made salvation available to fallen man – became the pivotal person in all of time – The Hinge Pin of History.

The Apostle Paul put it this way in 1 Corinthians 15: 3-4

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”

Jesus made the acceptable payment for sin. His death reconciled man to God, for those who trust in Him. Trust in Jesus Christ frees one from the slavery and penalty of sin.

That is great news!
