AFMA Fire Corps Member Advance to Fire Inspector

Carl Schell, an Arizona Fire & Medical Authority Fire Corps volunteer, recently attended the 2019 Arizona State Fire School where he completed classes for “Arizona State Fire Inspector 2.” Previously, Schell and fellow Fire Corps volunteers Brian Curry and Roger Fell had certified as “Arizona State Fire Inspector 1” and have conducted numerous commercial fire inspections and re-checks within the AFMA/Sun Lakes boundaries. They also assist AFMA’s Community Risk Division doing spot inspections and complaints. LouAnn Sedgwick, lead volunteer Fire Corps liaison, remarked, “Carl’s dedication and willingness to further educate himself in the technical aspects of fire inspection is to be commended. He provides a valuable service to the Sun Lakes community as well as assisting the AFMA Fire Marshals.” (Photo by Brian Curry)

AFMA offers CCR and AED Classes to the Community

Arizona Fire & Medical Authority/Sun Lakes Fire Corps members Betty Earp (left) and Mikell Christian (right) who are the leads for the Community Assistance Program’s “Community Initiative” program demonstrate how to do CCR (Cardio-Cerebral Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) at one of their first Friday of the month trainings in CCR/AED usage. This training is available for free to all members of the greater Sun Lakes community. Earp, a retired registered nurse, and Christian, a still-practicing RN, also do their trainings at other Sun Lakes locations, having served over 300 people. The first Friday sessions are downstairs at AFMA/Sun Lakes Station 232 on Alma School Road at noon. To register, call the firehouse at 623-544-5400. Assisting Earp and Christian were CAP members Jo Birlin and Ramon Rubio. (Photo and caption by Brian Curry)

A Great Anniversary to Remember

Brian Curry

Anytime Sun Lakes Country Club resident Mike Marr walks into Station 231 of the Arizona Fire & Medical Authority/Sun Lakes, the crews are very happy to see him. Five years ago, Mike collapsed and was in full cardiac arrest. His wife Sheryl called 911 who dispatched the on-duty crew to the scene while the dispatcher gave Sheryl instructions on how to administer CPR. The crews arrived and took over and then administered multiple shocks to Mike’s heart, both in his home and en route to Chandler Hospital. The AFMA/Sun Lakes Community Assistance Program assisted Sheryl at their home and at the hospital.

It’s Open House Season Again

Brian Curry

As part of welcoming back the snowbirds and part time residents of Sun Lakes, all of the communities hosted open houses during the month of October. Pictured here is some of the large attendance at the Cottonwood-Palo Verde Open House. The remaining event is the Neighbors Who Care welcome back event taking place on Nov. 2 at their Riggs & Alma School Road parking lot beginning at 9 a.m.
