Unity: Healing

Kay Davis

Unity Church of Sun Lakes is a loving and positive, supportive and health-minded Spiritual Community. Jesus is our teacher as well as other spiritual masters. We use affirmative prayer to make positive change in our lives. We meet on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the Arts and Crafts Room at SLCC. Rev. Debbi Brown/Adams presides, and coffee and fellowship follow the service. Those who visit us tell us that going to church at Unity feels like coming home. We hope you will visit.

Unity is a Spiritual Movement which began in the late 1800s and is based on prayer and the power of mind over matter. The founders, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, both suffered with physical ailments and constantly sought healing. They attended a lecture by E.B. Weeks, and Myrtle was inspired by a new idea. She said, “I am a child of God and, therefore, I do not inherit sickness.” Myrtle had been sickly during her young life, and her family believed she would probably die at a young age. After two years of prayer and meditation, she healed her body of tuberculosis. Charles also used spiritual principles and healed a leg which was damaged in a childhood accident. They followed the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and studied with the leading teachers of that time, including Mary Baker Eddy and Emma Curtis Hopkins, and in 1889, they published the magazine, Modern Thought, which is now Unity Magazine. In 1890, they formed a prayer group, which today is Silent Unity, a prayer ministry that responds to two million people a year through letters, phone calls and email. This powerful worldwide movement started with one woman and one man and their healing experiences, and today we continue to pray ourselves into wellness.
