Yoga – Vinyasa style

Sheila Axtman

It’s February, a great month to celebrate the things that make you feel good: the people you love, chocolate and yoga. Practicing yoga releases endorphins in your brain. You feel relaxed and happy. Vinyasa yoga also improves proprioception, strengthens and stretches your muscles, and you become more flexible. It helps you feel and move like a younger person, gives you a sense of wellbeing, improves your performance in other activities, and you will meet some fun people.

In Vinyasa yoga, we do standing, seated and lying Asanas (poses), synchronizing our breathing with our movements. Because this is a dynamic rather than a static practice, it is not suitable for students who have never done yoga before. However, if you are fit and healthy, Tuesday’s class may be a good fit for you. Both Tuesdays and Thursdays I will offer modifications so everyone can benefit from their practice, and everyone can explore their limits. Tuesday’s classes will be less challenging than Thursday’s. We will move slower, and I will offer more modifications. Thursday’s classes may move a bit faster, and more challenging variations may be offered.

The yoga group is friendly and welcoming. Please join us.

Class schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. in Room A-6 in Cottonwood. Class fee is $5.00 a class.

I have some blocks, straps and blankets available for students to use. There are also a couple of extra mats. Bring your own mat if you have one.

I am a RYT200 (registered yoga teacher).

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I would like to say what a privilege and humbling experience it is to teach yoga and live in Sun Lakes. Much thanks to the Sun Lakes HOA2 management team (a special thanks to Linda Caton and Julie in the Rec. Dept.), also the people who keep our room clean, and thank you to the Sun Lakes Splash. Last, but not least, Happy Valentine’s Day, and Thank You to my students. It is my goal to improve my teaching skills and your yoga experience every time you step on the mat. Namaste’
