How’s Your Racquet?

Ralph Howland and his dog Rolo

Barb Jorgensen

Have you ever noticed the well-mannered poodle that is Ralph Howland’s constant companion on and around the tennis courts? Rolo, at 11 years old, is the official mascot of the Cottonwood Tennis Club, but we may not see him much this winter!

His owner Ralph Howland is Cottonwood Tennis Club’s resident racquet re-stringer. Ralph strings racquets not just for us, but for our neighboring communities and for the Hamilton High School Lady Huskies as well. But beware, there’s a time limit on his services. Ralph has been exploring the good life in La Paz, Mexico, for the winter months.

Recently, Ralph unexpectedly lost the love of his life, Gina, his wife of 35 years. Prior to living in Sun Lakes, they owned and operated a poker room in Seattle. Ralph frequently visits his stepdaughter Nikki in Seattle when she’s not visiting here and tearing up the tennis court. He also has a stepson, Brian.

Ralph still enjoys playing poker when he’s not playing tennis, stringing racquets, and running an airport shuttle service. By the way, Ralph doesn’t just string the racquets. He will watch your play, identify your needs and playing style, and adjust your racquet accordingly.

While he loves Mexican culture and is already in demand for his expertise at tennis clubs in La Paz, Mexico, he does plan to return in April to his many friends here in Arizona.

He has pointed out that his phone works in Mexico, so don’t be a stranger. Boy! Wouldn’t he be surprised to find a few of us vacationing in La Paz and perhaps needing some new strings while we are there?!
