August brings the dog days of summer. The Romans called August venerable, noble, and majestic. The Romans never played August golf in Arizona where we call it steamy, sticky, and sweaty.
Sad News: Having been a Niner since 1999, I was lucky to have met and played golf with a few of the founding members. One of these was Paul DeRose who recently passed away. Paul was a wonderful guy, a gentleman, and a ready volunteer for any task. He was the first treasurer of the Niners. Playing golf with Paul was a pleasure. He made newcomers feel welcome and provided all sorts of information about Oakwood and golf. One of Paul’s tips to me was, “Don’t swing like a gorilla. It will go into the trees.” To Anne and the members of the DeRose family, I offer our deepest condolences.

Game Managers: There are five members who do important work, mostly unnoticed, and make the weekly games work like a well-oiled machine. I am speaking about the game managers.
Under the direction of VP Jerry Richards, these guys make up the pairings, do the post-game tabulations, and create the Winners List. So, the next time you review the pairings or check your winnings, give a thought to the game managers, all volunteers and hard workers. So, a tip of the old golf cap to Jerry Richards, Jack Baur, Bob Clark, and our newest GM, Alan Aken.
