Sew-N-Sews Inspiration Abounds

Phyllis Prysock

Our members are a talented, creative, and inspiring group. We are always very appreciative of the creations of other members, as each month we are treated to a display of projects in the Show and Tell portion of our monthly program. Recently, our Garment Gusto co-leader Kathy Libby showed us her jacket embellished with Sashiko designs. Sashiko is a Japanese hand stitching and embroidery technique which is traditionally done on cotton fabric using white thread.

Garment Gusto is only one of the Special Interest Groups available to you as a member of Sew-N-Sews. Our Special Interest Groups meet monthly in the Oakwood Sewing Room in a small setting to enjoy each other’s company, laugh together, and share the love of our sewing hobby. There is a monthly Embroidery Group, Die Cutting Machines (Cricut), Featherweights, Sew What? (shares applique or other small projects), Stitch and Chat (shares handwork like knitting, crocheting, or anything), as well as two Charity Sewing Groups: Children’s Charities and Pads4Paws. We even have a group called Sew Social with the sole purpose of going to lunch. We also publish a monthly newsletter for members with information on upcoming classes, lots of pictures, and news of interest to our members.

Pictured is a jacket embellished with Sashiko designs made by Garment Gusto co-leader Kathy Libby. Kathy has taken the technique to the next level in this beautiful jacket. All of the Sashiko designs have been hand embroidered on dark blue cotton fabric. As you can guess, this stunning jacket was not a quick project, and it is Kathy’s pride and joy, and rightly so.

Sew-N-Sews meets monthly in the Navajo Room of Sun Lakes Country Club, 25601 E Sun Lakes Blvd. N, on the second Wednesday of each month. Our business meeting and program start at 1 p.m., and we invite you to come early and peruse the upcoming class offerings and the Stash Table.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Navajo Room of Sun Lakes Country Club. The program will be a trunk show presented by member Judy Wells, needlepoint artist extraordinaire.

Guests are welcome to see what we are all about and may attend two meetings before joining. Membership is open to all Sun Lakes residents and anyone who lives outside of Sun Lakes with a Sun Lakes member sponsor. The new membership fee is $25 and includes a name badge. Renewal dues are $15 a year thereafter.
