’Tis the season! No, not Christmas. It is the season when bugs and all sorts of pesky creatures invite themselves into our homes, our backyard gatherings, and our campsites. Whether you are trekking through the backwoods or stepping out in the backyard, you need protection against insects and bugs. With an alarming amount of insect-borne diseases and the pain and annoyance that comes with getting bit, a good insect repellent is crucial for keeping those pesky critters at bay. You may have safety concerns related to both environmental and human health with the use of synthetic chemicals to control insects and pests. Essential oils are a natural way for warding off bugs so you are better able to enjoy the outdoors. There are ways to ditch chemical-based repellents sold over the counter and replace them with a natural repellent.
Bites, cuts, stings, bruises, and burns are no fun when you are trying to enjoy the outdoors. Try these essential oils to be on your way to happier trails.
One of the most effective ways to keep bugs at bay is by diffusing. Get a portable, battery-operated diffuser and add an essential oil such as citronella, lemongrass, or geranium to the diffuser. Place it on your table or in your tent.
My personal choice for an insect repellent is Terrashield—Nature’s Armor. This is a proprietary blend of powerful essential oils, carefully selected for their natural ability to help repel insects. I use this during the summer on my early morning golf outings. Simply spray your exposed skin with Terrashield and the bugs will stay away. And for those of you who have fur babies, Terrashield can be used for them before you begin your walks.
Another option is this basic bug spray recipe. Use a 4 oz. bottle and add:
2 oz. witch hazel
2 oz. distilled water
5 drops patchouli oil
10 drops geranium oil
10 drops lemongrass oil
10 drops citronella oil
15 drops lavender oil
Shake well before each use.
If you get bitten by a mosquito, apply lavender, helichrysum, or tea tree oil. If you get a bee sting, try lavender, lemongrass, tea tree, peppermint, or purify oil.
Lavender, lemongrass, lemon, tea tree, or peppermint can help give relief for snake bites.
