Our Fall Softball Season opened on Oct. 29 and wrapped up on Dec. 20. There were still over two weeks to go in the season at the press deadline for this issue of the Splash, so if you can’t wait until next month, you’ll have to go to the Stats page on our website www.sunlakessoftball.com to find out which teams won the Lakes and Sun Division titles.
As of early December, the A-1 Golf Carts-sponsored team, managed by Dave Kratz, led the Lakes Division with a 9-3 record. The other three squads in the division were all tied with 5-7 won-lost records. In the Sun Division, Interim Manager Doug Friesen’s Camp Hilby squad and Manager Ron Carmichael’s Redeemed Team were tied atop the standings with 6-4 records. There were four players off to great starts with averages over .800, two in each division. Vern Rodgers led the Lakes Division with a robust .833 average, while Dan Malachuk was at .815. In the Sun Division, George Siegele was batting .809, while Mike Lebert was close behind at .806. Don Long had smashed an incredible 19 home runs in his first 10 games played. A full rundown of the league leaders and the final standings will appear in next month’s Splash.
After a short holiday hiatus, our Winter Season starts on Jan. 7 and runs through Feb. 18. The regular season is followed by a double-elimination tournament in each division during the week of Feb. 25.
Baseball quote by Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby: “I don’t want to ever play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to chase it!” Sounds like a good plan!
