The last dance of the 2013-2014 Cotillion Dance Club was recently held in the Ballroom of the Oakwood Country Club. Celebrating springtime and the Kentucky Derby, the semi-formal affair theme for the evening was The Mint Julep Ball.
Greeted by Allen and Ruth Lavin and Shirley Spade, the 166 attendees arrived, as always, in grand style. The ladies’ creativity in wearing hats of every color and size was definitely the topic for the evening. Dining on choices of pork tenderloin medallions, Florentine stuffed sole and roasted vegetables in phyllo, the true palate pleaser was the pecan pie with Kentucky bourbon sauce.
Route 66 provided the music for the evening, keeping many of the members and their guests on the dance floor from start to finish. A video produced by Fred and Linda Smith with pictures provided by Joel Goldman and Ken Alejandro was played throughout the evening. Many members purchased a copy of the summary of the year’s events featuring each member.
Each year, the April dance is held around the anniversary of Tony and Gloria Petriello. This year it was actually on their anniversary. Not just an anniversary, it was their 66th! Members joined them in dancing to their song, “Spanish Eyes.” Congratulations to the Petreillos and all the wonderful couples who joined them in the celebration.
The opening dance for the 2014-2015 season will be held October 11. Details of the dance and the full schedule and bands will be provided in the upcoming months.
The Cotillion Dance Club hosts six themed dances each season from October to April with the exception of December. April and October are the only dances that are not black tie affairs. Membership is at capacity at this time; however, members may bring guests from Sun Lakes and SunBird or out of town guests who are visiting. Members are also reminded dues for the upcoming season are due at this time.
