Bill Shedd

The Financial Crimes Unit of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) presented a Financial Crimes Awareness Seminar at St. Steven’s Catholic Church on Oct. 24. The seminar was well attended, and a lot of very important information was presented to the large group.

The presentation reviewed how to identify and protect yourself from common frauds and scams. There was also a special agent from the Social Security Administration who presented information and answered questions.

Topics covered included Government Impersonator Scams, “You’ve Won” Scams, Tech Support Scams, Grandkid and Family Scams, Job and Money-Making Scams, Romance Scams, Phone Scams, and How to Handle Unwanted Calls.

If you get scam calls or robocalls, please contact the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357 or go online to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

The Financial Crimes Unit is making outreach to the community a greater priority in an attempt to educate and get ahead of people falling victim to scams and fraud.
