New Adventures in Learning (NA) proudly presents its new logo. It represents our lifelong learning program in the desert which has been working to serve our community for over 20 years. The introduction of the logo update marks the beginning of a new chapter for the all-volunteer, non-profit organization.
As our community took on the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, NA sought a new way to stay connected to its members. To present a wide range of classes to area adults, we learned how to present effectively via Zoom. Not only our volunteer presenters and support people had to be ready to go using this new application, we also were committed to making it easy enough for our members to feel comfortable with that approach.
Adapting to the needs of its growing number of members is how NA has operated since 1998 when a small group of Sun Lakes residents began working with Chandler-Gilbert Community College to establish a learning-in-retirement program for mature adults who shared a curiosity and desire for learning.
Going forward, the organization will continue presenting classes via Zoom for those who prefer the virtual learning option. But plans are underway for the upcoming fall semester to include in-person classes as life after COVID begins to take form.
Change isn’t new to this homegrown non-profit. Over the years, not only did the number of class offerings increase, but the format of classes offered has evolved. Although the traditional lecture-type format is still popular, our members are able to enjoy field trips, discussion groups, book groups, and technology-related classes. In addition, specialty classes have been held when new opportunities arise. For example, in 2017 New Adventures welcomed faculty and graduate students from ASU who shared their research related to studies of aging—particularly related to motor skills and balance. These researchers now include many New Adventures members as volunteer subjects in actual ongoing research carried out at the Sun Lakes Center.
To all who have contributed to the growth and success of New Adventures along the way, we offer our heartfelt thanks. To those who haven’t taken advantage of the many opportunities offered through the organization, we encourage you to visit the website to learn more: www.newadventures.info.
