Message from the President
Joe D’Amore, IronOaks Board President
By the time you are reading this article, you are either preparing for your Thanksgiving meal or have already had it. Either way, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.
As I am writing this message, I am planning on checking out the new golf drivers at the Golf Expo we will have (or have already had) on Nov. 3 at our Oakwood driving range. Always a very fun event, even for non-golfers. It’s like a mini festival, so come on down if it still hasn’t happened yet. If it already happened, I hope you had a great time. Sometimes I feel like I am in a sort of time warp when I write my Splash article. Kind of a weird experience, but those of you who truly know me know that I am no stranger to weird phenomena.
Team Trivia is alive and well in our Oakwood ballroom and has been very well attended. My wife and I were invited to sub at the Monday, Sept. 27, event and had a really great time. Give it a try.
Also, alive and getting more popular at each event are the Open Mic Nights, hosted by Kevin Crum. They are at Ironwood’s Grill on the Green restaurant and are held the fourth Tuesday of each month. The November event will be on Nov. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m., and is guaranteed to get you in the Thanksgiving mood. If you play an instrument or sing, come and perform with us. If you don’t, come for the fun entertainment. The November event promises to be particularly lively because SLUG will be performing, that is, the Sun Lakes Ukulele Group.
IronOaks will be hosting a Big Band Dance on Nov. 10 in the Oakwood ballroom. I am planning to be there but need to brush up on some dancing moves. My wife will help me, I am sure. I personally love big band music. My favorite big band was the Count Basie Orchestra. But I also love many other big bands. And I particularly enjoyed the movies about them, like The Glenn Miller Story and The Benny Goodman Story. I didn’t think Steve Allen could pull off starring as Benny Goodman, but I was wrong. The section of the Ken Burns’ PBS series on Jazz that I liked best was—you guessed it—the big band era.
There are many more fun events scheduled here at IronOaks in November, including bus trips to Tubac, the Fountain Hills Arts Festival, and a VIP Wine Festival Trip. IronOaks homeowners can find all the dates in the homeowner section of our IronOaks website. Just go into the Lifestyle section in the Menu, and then click on the Fall Adventures tab. Easy peasy, right?! In that section, you will also find the list of November concerts, which are very enjoyable. For those of you in our sister communities, contact the concierge desk at Oakwood to see if you can participate in any of these events.
So, go out there and have some fun! @
