I imagine you thought that with the Oakwood golf course closed for a month there wouldn’t be any OLGA golf news. Well, guess again. I have a lot to report, starting with a quote from last month’s article. If you didn’t read it, I mentioned that consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds. Last month I looked over the October results and mentioned several players who are actually quite consistent. Well, now it’s time to single out two of the most inconsistent ones. More on the two golfers who won that contest hands down later in this article. Read on, as my old professor used to say.
The State Medallion event is held at Oakwood every year in January. Good luck trying to get a tee time on Saturday or Sunday. Anyway, here is how the contestants in the event are selected: Ladies golf leagues around the state select four play dates during the year when your score counts to qualify for the event. The golfer with the two lowest gross scores and the golfer with the two lowest net scores qualify for the event. Dari Akin was both low gross, and Nancy Cohn was low net. Good luck, ladies!
Now for the inconsistency award. It goes to Dari Aitkin, since she was actually both low gross and low net at Oakwood, and yours truly was both low gross and low net at Ironwood. It takes a lot of streaky, inconsistent golf to manage to be both low gross and low net. No hobgoblins in our golf bags.
In other news, our wonderful OLGA president Sharon Skoworn had a number of her committee members over for a “thank you for your service” lunch at her house. I actually think she was really celebrating the last month of her term as president.
We’re looking forward to Oakwood reopening soon, but not so much looking forward to cart-path-only for two weeks. Hopefully, the sand traps have been improved. Love the new tee markers, though. I guess some of the homeowners aren’t thrilled with the new “desertscape.” Can’t say I blame them. I miss the green grass and trees of Minnesota, but not the taxes. However, we need to remember that this is the desert.
There are lots of important events coming up in December, not the least of which are the Low Net Championship and the Member-Member event. See you next month. Until then, keep the faith in your golf swing, and let those expensive clubs do the work.
