Sew-N-Sews is a club for sewing enthusiasts who enjoy working with any type of fiber arts. Our general meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club. Our business meeting starts at 1 p.m. Guests are welcome to attend two meetings before joining. New membership is open to all Sun Lakes residents. One of our favorite parts of the meeting is our Show and Tell where members display items they have made.
In addition to our general meeting, we have several charity and friendship groups and offer classes to our members.
One of our charity groups is Pads4Paws. This group started making pet beds with donated fabric and scraps in 2009. Since then, we have made and delivered over 7000 pads to numerous animal shelters, rescue, and adoption groups, with the majority of the pads going to the Veterans Stand Down event.
We use donated cotton scraps that are at least three inches square. We mix the cut-up cotton with poly fiberfill batting from old pillows (not foam or feather) or other donations of fiberfill. The covers are made of larger pieces of donated fabric—usually heavier cottons. We are unable to use long pieces of selvage trimmed from quilts, since the dogs or cats who chew might choke on them. All of the pads are washable and made in various sizes.
Pads4Paws meets each month in the Oakwood Sewing Room on the third Friday afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the following day (Saturday). Pads4Paws is accepting usable donations at this time. If you have any usable cotton scraps or Poly-fil that you are willing to donate, please contact us at [email protected].
Sew-N—Sews’ next general meeting will be held on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. in the Navajo Room, at Sun Lakes Country Club. Anyone wanting to come early at 11:30 a.m. to have lunch in the Sunset Grill before the meeting is welcome to join us then. We welcome new members. The new member fee is $25, which includes the first-year membership and a Sew-N-Sews name badge. We hope to see you there on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
