Sew-N-Sews Stays Cool

Eileen Turner

Christmas ornaments, knitting without needles, finishing a project, and making clothing that fits, Sun Lakes Sew-N-Sews is making this hot, desert summer a cool time. Several groups and workshops continue through this summer with projects in the Sewing Room at the Ocotillo clubhouse.

Connie Hogan led a workshop to make Christmas ornaments. This half-day workshop met, and several ladies are ready to decorate or pass out gifts for the upcoming Christmas season. What a fantastic way to use those leftover scraps of fabric and spend an afternoon of chatting and laughing while creating joyfully colored fabric ornaments.

Sheilah Buscaglia taught a group to knit with no knitting needles. The ladies learned to knit using only their fingers and special yarn. Several projects were completed.

Sew-N-Sews is not only for crafts and donations of sewing projects. There is an incredibly supportive group of ladies, Garment Gustos. This group focuses on making garments that fit and flatter you. They have explored fabrics, tools, pattern designs, and alterations to make the perfect fit. These ladies have found the secret to binding the group together in a relaxing, fun, and supportive atmosphere. Sharing experiences and knowledge of techniques, they assist and encourage each other to create garments that are flattering and comfortable to wear.

Sew-N-Sews will continue with more classes, workshops, and meetings to get through the month. Upcoming classes or workshops will include making a cactus pillow, a rooster pin cushion, and a mesh tote bag.

Sun Lakes Sew-N-Sews meets monthly from September through May, on the second Wednesday of each month in the Navajo Room in the Phase 1 clubhouse at 1 pm. The first meeting of the 2024-25 season will be on Sept. 11.
