Niners July Golf Results

Jim Wegman, Publicity

The July results are in the books, and we are halfway through the year. Some of us are wishing that the summer was over and that we were playing fall golf. Wow, so far, these last two months have been tough on our members.

Gentlemen, another of our former members has passed away. Murray Luther was a Niner for five years. He was a nice guy on and off the course. Our sincere condolences are offered to Connie and the Luther family.

There are so many tips about how to play the grand game of golf, it sometimes makes one’s head spin. So here is a simple tip from one of the greatest golfers who ever teed it up. Sam Snead said, “When I swing at a golf ball right, my mind is a blank and my body is as loose as a goose.”

We play the game of golf for fun and fellowship, but we may miss the interesting details and definitions of this very old game. The collar of a green is also called an apron, fringe, or frog hair. This is a relatively consistent width of grass that surrounds a putting green but is not cut as low as the green itself.

The game of golf was invented by the Scots. That is a usually accepted fact. However, there is another game called Paganica, invented by the ancient Romans. This was played with a leather ball stuffed with feathers and a bent stick. The name means “the game of the countrymen.” Could they be referring to the Scots?
