The Sun Is Setting on Summer Softball

Game action: Rick Thompson is ready to swing away at that big yellow ball!

Our “Boys of Summer” have almost made it through another long, hot summer softball season. The season began on April 30 and wraps up on Sept. 19. Four teams participated, with doubleheaders played every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Each team played one doubleheader per week over the 21-week season. Thanks to our summer league managers Joe Commisto, Gary Hillabolt, Larry Maggard, and Kim Whitney and to our volunteer scorers, scoreboard operators, umpires, and groundskeepers who made the program a success.

We’ll soon be shutting down the Field of Dreams for our annual overseeding of the outfield grass. As of the publication deadline, the specific dates were not yet known. Check our website, www.sunlakessoftball.com, for updates. We’ll temporarily have batting practice and pick-up games at Snedigar Field in Chandler during the overseeding process.

Within the next few weeks, our website will also include information regarding signing up for the Fall Season, which is anticipated to start in late October.

Here are some things recently overheard at the senior softball field:

“I couldn’t hear you. The sun was in my eyes!”

“I am running!”

“I got it! I got it! No, I don’t!”

“Swing hard, in case you hit it!”

‘til next month, keep running hard and turn left!
