Friday Morning Easy Play/Practice Bridge

Everyone is welcome to the Friday morning Easy Play/Practice Bridge Group which meets each Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in the Ladies Card Room in the Cottonwood Activity Center. This group is designed to be a very low-stress bridge experience for beginning to intermediate players who want to brush up on their play or for those who have not played for a while and need a refresher. We discuss the hands as we play. We encourage questions and discussion about the hands, bidding alternatives and play options. We often do not keep score, because the purpose of this group is to work on improving our play rather than making points.

You do not need to sign up. You can just show up. Because you do not need to sign up, we may not always have an even number of players to fill tables. For this reason, sometimes we share a dummy or we have observers/advisors or we rotate players. You are encouraged to bring your favorite instruction book and/or crib sheet for use during play or as a reference.

If you have any questions about this group, please call or text Patricia Crowle at 406-581-4566.

Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge

Alan Behr

The Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club games are held at Risen Savior Lutheran Church (23914 S. Alma School Road).

Open games are held on Monday at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. There also is a Novice game Thursday at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday a 499ers game at 1:30 p.m. (if there are enough entries in the field) and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. subject to having enough entries. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to game time!

If you are in need of a partner for any Open Games, please contact the Players’ Pairs Assistants Eileen Utter, Kay Kennedy and Carol Warner at [email protected]. Please try the email first if you have access to a computer. Fees for the game are $6.00/person if you are a member of the club or $7.00/person if not a club member.

When you are bidding, please observe the 10-second rule when your opponent makes a “skip” (jump) bid. By not doing so, you may be giving your partner some information which is not appropriate. If this happens, the director may be called to give instructions on the line of play that may follow. This happens quite often and should be avoided.

I also want to thank Bob Garvey (a former member of our club) who continues to provide that statistics for us through a computer program which he developed. His work is greatly appreciated!

Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Intermediate and Novice

Karin Hanen

Fall was a very busy season for the Bridge Club as we welcomed back our snowbirds to join us at the tables. Many new friends and new partnerships are developing as players learn the game of bridge together. A series of classes were taught for beginning bridge players, and many of them are now playing on a regular basis. New classes will start again in January and February. If you are interested, please contact Maria Davis at [email protected].

There have been lots of great scores from our Novice and Intermediate players. High scores for the month of November were all on November 29. Tom Gillis and Howard Hummel had a 70% game, Lynn Kessel and Nancy Thoma had a 66.67% game, Robert Belton and Lilly Poole also scored 66.67% that day. Also, on November 29 in the afternoon game, Margaret Tam and Patricia Liddell scored 65.91%. Congratulations to these and all our players who have had great success at the bridge tables.

We are sure 2019 will continue to be a great year for our bridge players as they learn and grow.

Regular playing opportunities are available weekly for beginning, novice and intermediate players. On Thursday morning, a special game is held at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, 23914 S. Alma School Road, for newer players with 0-99 master points. The game begins at 8:15 a.m. with a short lesson followed by two hours of assisted play. Instructors and directors are available in the room to answer questions about the bidding while you are playing the hands. ACBL members can earn master points while playing in this game. The cost for the game is $6 for Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club members and $7 for all others. If you do not have a partner, one can be found for you. Questions about the Thursday morning game can be answered by Anne Newman, [email protected].

For advanced beginners and intermediate players, a regular duplicate game is held at Risen Savior Church on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. for players with 0-499 master points. Partners are required for this game. All players must arrive by 1:15 p.m. to register and be assigned a table. If you need help finding a suitable partner, contact our partnership coordinators Eileen Utter, Kay Kennedy and Carol Warner at [email protected].

Joining the Sun Lakes Bridge Club is easy and only $10 per year. Check with any of the directors, and they will be happy to assist you with the paperwork.

Questions about the Intermediate and Novice bridge program at Sun Lakes Duplicate Bridge Club can be sent to the representative, Karin Hansen, at [email protected].
