Desert Threads Quilters Get ‘Sew-cial’ at Monthly Meetings

Desert Threads members get a closer look at the presenter’s quilts made with “stash” fabric.

As cooler weather and our winter residents begin to return, Desert Threads will also return to our regularly scheduled meetings. Our monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month in the Lecture Hall of the Computer Learning Center at Cottonwood. Quilters and sewists of all skill levels are encouraged to join us. We meet at 9 a.m. for social time and start the business meeting at 9:30 a.m.

Some people say that buying fabric and quilting are two different hobbies, but most quilters will disagree, as we love to add to our stash. Our September chapter meeting featured Kathy O’Brien as our speaker. Kathy is an award-winning quilter and “Stash” expert. Her presentation “Stash Management!” was fun and helpful, as we all try to use that stash of fabrics that we just can’t resist buying but don’t have a plan for.

At our next chapter meeting on Oct. 9, our speaker will move us along to the latter part of quilt construction, quilting your quilt. Mona Adams from 35th Ave. Sew & Vac will present “Quilting with Your Walking Foot,” and she means more than just straight lines! Join us to learn how to finish your quilts without having to find a longarm quilter.

As a chapter of Arizona Quilters Guild (AQG), Desert Threads members are also preparing to participate in the annual AQG Quilt Show in Mesa, Ariz. The quilt show will be held in January of 2025, so many of our members are working on quilts to enter into the show. Admission deadline for quilt entry is Oct. 15.

If you’d like to learn more about Desert Threads and meet some of our friendly and talented quilters, stop by and see us at one of the upcoming Activities Open Houses. We will have a table set up at the following:

Cottonwood Palo Verde Open House: Oct. 5

Sun Lakes Country Club Open House: Oct. 12

IronOaks Open House: Oct. 26

We can’t wait to meet you!
