Essential oils and the holiday season

JoAnne Gaudioso

Wintertime in the Northern Hemisphere is a perfect time to enjoy diffusing and blending essential oils that will help get us into the spirit of the season. Whether it’s diffusing or blending oils that can be used in making holiday gifts or using Essential Oils in some of our traditional recipes, we can use these oils to celebrate the season.

Aromas are essential to the holidays. In past years, there was a great interest in using scented candles to bring these holiday scents into our homes. More recently, people have discovered that these scented paraffin candles release dangerous toxins into the air, the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes. Now we can replace these toxic candles by diffusing essential oils into the air, with no toxic side effects. In fact, certain blends will also protect you and your immune system, keeping you healthy through the holiday season.

Essential Oils can also be used to make scented greeting cards and tissue paper, adding a wonderful personal touch to your gift. You can even use essential oils to make some unique gifts for your friends and family.

Lastly, essential oils can be used in some of our traditional recipes. Why not try Peppermint Hot Chocolate or Lemon Drop Cookies on a cold afternoon?

Essential Oils commonly associated with the holiday season include coniferous oils like Siberian Fir or Douglas Fir, minty oils like Peppermint and Spearmint, resinous oils like Frankincense and Myrrh and spicy oils like Cinnamon Bark and Clove.

Join me in a workshop this month to learn about the basic 10 essential oils and how you can incorporate essential oils into your preparation for the holiday season. We will make a holiday blend that you will take home with you. Workshops are scheduled for Saturday, December 1, at 11:00 a.m.; Saturday, December 8, at 11:00 a.m.; and Saturday, December 15, at 11:00 a.m. If these times are not convenient, call me to find a day/time convenient for you. If you are interested in hosting a workshop for a small group of your friends/family, you will receive some lovely hostess gifts.
