Golden Goalies: How does it work?

Bea Loozer

Have you been thinking about joining Golden Goalies? Let me share with you how that works.

You just show up on Saturday morning between 7:00-7:30 at Sun Lakes Country Club’s Mirror Room. Not to worry, we’ll make you feel welcome. Alas, you will also be weighed; it’s a starting point. This is also a good time to tell Irene what your first weight loss goal is. Losing five or ten pounds is a worthy goal, but you choose whatever seems right to you.

Moving next door to the Friendship Room, we will introduce you to more wonderful women and begin our meeting. Rita then informs us about birthdays and members who are ill. We do go around the room to announce whether we lost, gained or turtled (no change), but honestly there is no pressure or embarrassment. Everyone gains and loses. Members who gained that week drop 15 cents in our collection pot, and someone who lost wins this piggy pot, which varies from $.45 to $2 or $3.

We also recognize the keepers, those who have met and maintained their weight loss goal. Then Sharon helps us conduct a bit of business and the winner of the piggy pot raffle is drawn.

Each week we have a speaker; usually one of our members sharing something she has learned and is comfortable sharing. Here is an example: Sandra brought in a big bag of sugar and talked us through an all too typical day’s food intake, things like cereal, toast and chicken soup; she then measured out each teaspoonful of sugar in the foods mentioned as we progressed through this typical day. Would you believe, it added up to over 60 teaspoons, which was quite a pile of sugar. Sandra’s session was pretty darned motivating.

We conclude with a joke, which brings on just the last of many laughs. Our goal is achieving healthy weight, but we work together with support and humor. It’s not a heavy meeting.

Drop by, whether you want to join or just check us out. Weigh-in is between 7:00-7:45 a.m. in the Mirror Room of Sun Lakes Country Club. The meeting starts after weigh-in next door in the Friendship Room. Contact Rita at 895-2559 for more information.
