It’s hot outside, but we’re cool here at the library! Our Summer Reading Program, for all ages, is in full swing! If you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still plenty of time to sign up, log your reading and earn a free book once you’ve read 1,000 minutes. The program ends on August 1. And do join us for the following events in July, where you can earn points for attending!
Thursdays, July 6, 13, 20 and 27, at 11:00 a.m. – Preschool Storytime
Join us for fun with books, songs, action-rhymes, flannelboards, crafts and more! Activities are developmentally appropriate for ages 3-6, but all ages are welcomed. Be ready to sing, learn, and discover!
Thursday, July 6, at 5:30 p.m. – Evening “History Through Fiction” Book Club
This month’s title is Fever 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson. In 1793 Philadelphia, 16-year-old Matilda Cook, separated from her sick mother, learns about perseverance and self-reliance when she is forced to cope with the horrors of a yellow fever epidemic. Registration is required.
Monday, July 10, at 1:00 p.m. – Adult Crafts: T-Shirt Tote Bags
Come chat, craft and get creative! We will turn old t-shirts into handy tote bags that can be used to carry books or groceries. Registration is required.
Tuesday, July 18, at 1:00 p.m. – Steelin’ the Night Away*
This Phoenix-based, all-female steel drum band will keep your toes tapping with Calypso and Caribbean inspired rhythms, beach/surf tunes and golden oldies. Bring your dancing shoes! This event is sponsored by the Sun Lakes Friends of the Library, who will be offering non-alcoholic Margaritas and piña coladas to add to the fun!
Wednesday, July 19, at 1:00 p.m. – DIY Teens: Buttons, Pins and Badges
Doesn’t matter if you call it a button, pin or a badge, come make your own! Use virtual badges earned through the Summer Reading Program or make your own design. We’ll play music and have a good time.
Thursday, July 20, at 1:00 p.m. – PHX Art Presents: Charles James: An Artist Beyond Fashion*
Phoenix Art Museum Docent Lori Kirkegaard presents a look at Charles James who is remembered and honored as being America’s first couture designer. His creative approach to women’s fashion is evident in his innovative cuts and designs that were wildly popular in the decades of the 1930s through the 1950s. This event is sponsored by the Sun Lakes Friends of the Library.
Saturday, July 22, at 10:00 a.m. – 3D Printing*
Join Chris Guerra, Project Specialist for the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, for a presentation and live demonstration of 3D printing (additive) manufacturing. Learn about the history, the process, the application and the future of this increasingly pervasive technology.
The library will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, for Independence Day.
*On the day of the program, please come by the library customer service desk for a free ticket, limit two per person. Please park in the church parking lot.
