November Golf Fore Life Tournament raises over $18,000 for Cancer Center

Liz DeMichael, Publicity

The 2017 Golf Fore Life Tournament was a big success thanks to everyone who participated and made donations. Over $18,600 was raised to support the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) in their research to end cancer.

On November 14, members from the Palo Verde and Cottonwood Ladies Golf Associations, the Cottonwood Lady Niners and the Palo Verde Men’s Golf Association participated in the Scramble event. Because 100 ladies entered the tournament, there were two flights. The ladies flight winners were Flight #1: Mary Lu Esget, Helen Jeub, Mary Anne Lofquist, Lori Whitney (1st); Cindy Bosch, Margaret Crandal, Colleen Mitchell and Carol Ruff (2nd) and Julie Curran, Jerry Jordan, Jan Nelson and Vallerie Verbeck (3rd); Flight #2: Pat Best, Marlene Knightly, Zara Logan and Barbara Senneff (1st); Elizabeth Campbell, Shirley Hutchings, Karen Ryan and Tammy Visser (2nd) and Virginia Cook, Karen Jensen, Maggie Kirchner and Lynnette Liffrig (3rd).

Forty-three men played in the tournament. The winners were Pat Holien, Jerry Lofquist, Jerry Packebush and Gary Zahnow (1st); Duncan Allan, Bob Butt, Phil Hollevolet and Bob Rouleau (2nd) and Dan Ashley, Gary Assenmacher, Ron Cox and Ed Johnson (3rd).

The tournament success was due to the Sun Lakes residents who purchased signs in memory of loved ones who have passed away or in honor of cancer survivors. We are also thankful for the support of area merchants and corporate sponsors who made so many unselfish donations.

Special thanks to the Golf Fore Life Tournament Committee: Susan Lamb (chairperson), Florence Wright, Cindy Bosch, Carol Ruff, Janet Baron, Carolyn Hoffland, Billie Seiberling, Sherrie Butler, Linda Grendahl, Colleen Mitchell and Jo Ann Hicks. None of it could have worked so smoothly without the hard work of the Palo Verde Golf Course pros and maintenance staff who made the tournament so enjoyable for everyone.

We hope the big winner, however, is UACC and the people who will benefit from the research they are doing to end cancer.
