Jewish War Veterans Copper State Post 619 (JWV) will feature two speakers at its Sunday, Jan. 19, meeting. Dawn Quinn, Donation Coordinator/Outreach at the Arizona Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), and Matt Hartman from Honor Flight Arizona will detail the important free services their organizations offer veterans.
JWV’s meeting takes place at the Oakwood Country Club, 24218 S. Oakwood Blvd. in Sun Lakes. A Meet & Greet with free lox and bagels, coffee, and doughnuts starts at 9:30 a.m., and the speaker follows at 10 a.m.
Paralyzed Veterans of America
PVA is the only nonprofit veteran service organization dedicated solely to helping veterans with spinal cord injuries and disorders and diseases like multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
They provide advocacy and support to the disabled community in a multitude of ways, which allows them to get back to living and enjoying their lives. PVA’s strongest impact would be their Medical Loan Closet in Phoenix, which serves veterans and families of veterans throughout the State of Arizona for free. Non-veterans are asked for a small donation for the items they require. PVA has served more than 1,000 veterans and non-veterans in the past year.
“My favorite medical give,” says Donation and Outreach Coordinator Dawn Quinn, “was when I stopped a 23-year-old college student at the State Fair during an event and begged her to let me provide her with a new wheelchair. Hers was covered in duct tape, because her wheels were badly ruined.”
Honor Flight
Honor Flight board member and Vietnam vet Matt Hartman will explain how Honor Flight pays homage to our veterans by offering World War II, Cold War, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces a free trip to see their memorials in Washington, D.C., at no cost to the veteran.
Vietnam veteran Sandy Borken couldn’t praise the trip enough.” It began at the airport with a breakfast hosted by the DAR women who then escorted us to our flight with a sendoff applause as we walked the concourse. Everything was first-class on the three-day trip, from hotels, food, memorials, and transportation to the guardians provided each veteran,” Borken concluded.
