Sun Lakes Rotary experienced a lively March with awards, recognitions, community involvement, and guest speakers as we continue our commitment to Service Above Self.

Sun Lakes Rotary Club donated $4,000 to Positive Paths to support vocational scholarships for women, and $4,000 was donated to AZCEND, a non-profit organization dedicated to changing lives in the community. The funds will support two programs: The Sun Lakes Home Meal Delivery, which provides meals to seniors living in Sun Lakes, and AZCEND’s Family Resource Center.

Our Rotarian of the Month for March is Marge Wright. Marge, a Rotarian since 1997 and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, joined our club in 2011. A regular attendee, she has been very involved in all education and club efforts and services. Recently, Marge volunteered her time through the PeaceBuilder committee, sparking passion and direction for peace within our communities and world.

For the April 2021 Rotary Week of Service, she helped choose the planting of a tree in a Chandler Park as the club project, supporting our work on environmental education and peace. Marge sponsored two new excellent members to our Rotary Club this year and has a regular Splash route each month! She is a past president of our club, past president of an Illinois club, and an assistant district governor for three years. Congratulations, Marge!

Our recent speakers have included Howard Berg, “Mr. Reader,” who spoke to us about ways to increase reading speed and memory. Other speaker topics in March included “Why Lincoln Matters” and “The Power of Finding Your Voice.” Mayor Kevin Hartke is scheduled to speak on March 30 about community issues in Chandler.

April events include a presentation on “Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day” and a speech competition. For the “Four-Way Speech Contest,” students write and deliver a speech related to the four principles of Rotary:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial to all?

On April 22, Sun Lakes Rotary will celebrate the City of Chandler’s Tree Planting event with a 3:15 p.m. ceremony near the Snedigar Park East children’s playground. Stay tuned for more details.
