Unity Church: Let’s celebrate!

Kay Davis

Unity Church of Sun Lakes is a spiritual community which seeks a deeper connection with Spirit through the practice of affirmative prayer, meditation, study, friendship, fun, and service. Our Sunday celebration is at 9:30 a.m. in the Arts and Crafts Room of Sun Lakes Country Club which is located a long block south of Riggs Road on Sun Lakes Blvd. in the furthest building south in the club. Rev. Jeanne MacLaughlin is our spiritual leader, and Francine Alexander is our minister of music. Coffee and fellowship follow the service.

It’s the holiday season, and we find ourselves surrounded and immersed in all the traditional activities of Christmas. Special treats, cards and gifts, lights and decorations, bells ringing, choirs singing, it’s red and green and pretty. We think of people we may not have seen the past year and also those who are no longer with us and hold them near in our hearts. We make our plans to be with our family and friends and now with all this commotion going on, we feel the need to be still and remember why we celebrate.

The Nativity scene shows us Mary and Joseph bending toward their newborn baby Jesus. There is a gathering around his straw bed that includes Kings, Wise Men, shepherds and their sheep, as well as the innkeeper. The brightest of bright stars illuminates the scene. In our mind, we join them and find we are amazed at this miracle of birth and are filled up with pure love. Every person there is represented in us. Like Mary, we give birth and nurture; like Joseph, we support and are loving; like the shepherds, we “watch over our flock.” We are Spiritual leaders like the Wise Men, bring the baby gifts like Kings, and are filled with love like Jesus. The story of Jesus’ birthday is a beautiful and simple story. It’s the story of the human family, and as we celebrate it, we know we were there in Spirit 2000 years ago, just as we are today.
