Unity: Mindfulness

Kay Davis

Unity Church of Sun Lakes is a New Thought Community. We think positive thoughts, pray in the affirmative, and follow the teachings of Jesus as well as other wise, spiritual leaders who came before and after him. Rev. Jeanne MacLaughlin records our weekly services on YouTube. To watch, open our website www.unitychurchofsunlakes.org and select Services.

What is mindfulness? Merriam Webster defines it as: “the quality of being mindful, 2. the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment to moment basis, 3. a state of awareness.” Psychology Today describes it this way: “Mindfulness encompasses two key ingredients, awareness and acceptance.” Rev. Jacquie Fernandez in Jan./Feb. Unity Magazine tells us that “awareness is the most direct path to healing, taking place beyond the mind. The antidote to any kind of struggle always lies within us. Choosing the habit of mindfulness results in the awareness of self and Self, our humanity and our divinity.” Being aware of our thoughts, emotions, and bodily feelings we know what is impeding our healing. If we are holding resentment, sadness, anger, or shame in our heartspace, it creates density in our body and impedes both our spiritual and physical wellbeing. I encourage you to read about and try to employ this healing practice.
