Pat Prekel, Secretary
It’s the time of year when all the Sun Lakes Roadrunners who left for the summer are returning home to Arizona. There will be many adventures to share when they all get together this fall.
A group of 20 members of the RV Club started the summer with a trip up the central coast of California from Santa Barbara and ending in Morro Bay. Led by wagonmasters Sally and Larry Walby and Janet and Ed Carlstrom, the group visited Hearst Castle, enjoyed tastings at various wineries, viewed elephant seals lounging on the beach and had a good laugh at the melodrama, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. As usual on a rally, the group enjoyed many meals together, including a few at Elks Lodges, various restaurants and even some they prepared themselves.
One of the favorite home-cooked meals was hobo stew. Here’s the recipe: Place a pat of butter and a raw hamburger patty in an aluminum take-out container (or use a foil pouch you make yourself). Add veggies, such as very-thinly-sliced potatoes, carrots, green/red peppers, onions. Top with spices of your choice and a slice of cheese. Cover and cook on the grill for 20 minutes. Mix up and enjoy.
After the wonderful rally, the club members said goodbye and ventured off on their individual summer wanderings. They visited many national parks and other points of interest in our beautiful United States of America, venturing as far from home as the New England states or staying close to home in the mountains of Northern Arizona. Some members even made a special trip to Wyoming to get a spectacular view of the solar eclipse.
Although we enjoyed our travels this summer, we were saddened by the loss of one of our longtime members, Leonard Meyer, when he lost his battle with cancer. Leonard was a very active member of the Roadrunners and often volunteered to act as wagonmaster for one of our rallies. He was a friendly and caring person and will be greatly missed by our members.
Now the plans for this new season begin, starting with a trip to Rocky Point in October followed by Florence, Arizona, in early November. If you are interested in finding out more about this organization, please join us at one of our meetings. The Sun Lakes Roadrunners RV Club meets the second Tuesday of each month in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club. Our first meeting this season will be October 10, 2017, with refreshments served at 6:30 p.m. and meeting at 7:00 p.m. All prospective members and visitors are welcome.
