Members of the American Association of University Women Southwest Valley Branch (AAUW) have volunteered at San Marcos Title 1 Elementary School for over 10 years. The AAUW ladies who participate in this program volunteer every week for one to three hours to help in the reading fluency program. The reading activities provide another opportunity for the student to practice reading aloud as well as reinforcement, comprehension and organizational techniques. Each volunteer is assigned four to five students to meet with weekly. Teachers and staff at San Marcos have been very welcoming to the volunteers. Debra Vickman, reading specialist, has been particularly helpful. The volunteers are able to offer the students individual attention and help determine each child’s strengths, difficulties and interests.
Other AAUW ladies help at San Marcos, Galveston and Hartford Schools in the Art Masterpiece and Junior Achievement programs. There are many reasons to volunteer, including the following: You make a difference, volunteering encourages civic responsibility, you get a chance to give back, you learn a lot and It will probably help you reduce stress and make you healthier.
AAUW Southeast Valley Branch meets on the third Monday of the Month in the Oakwood Country Club Ballroom. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. with program starting at 7:00 p.m.
