It was a cloudy August day in 2001, and the motorcycle ride through the Rockies with his wife Stevie was enjoyable. Then an elderly lady rounded a bend left of center and headed straight toward them. Steve reacted quickly, turned the Harley to the right, taking the full impact on his left side and severing his leg below the knee. Stevie flew over 60 feet in the air and was rendered unconscious. Fortunately, both survived.
Recovery was a long and painful process, but this Marine, the only college graduate in his family of eight children and Director of Engineering for Charter Communications, demonstrated courage, grace and determination. Steve’s attitude was so positive during rehab that the doctors asked him to speak with other amputees who were having a tough time dealing with their loss. Steve carried on with his career and continues to live a successful, positive and fulfilling life.
His youth in Price, Utah, with four brothers and three sisters was filled with baseball practice, family activities and playing drums in a band. When he turned 18, Steve volunteered for the Marine Corps and was quickly identified as someone with special abilities. His Marine Corps service as a cryptologist during the Vietnam War took him to Okinawa, Guam, the Philippines, Cambodia and elsewhere in the Pacific.
His post-military career began with a job as one of the few male directory assistant operators with Ma Bell. Utilizing the G.I. Bill, he earned a BA in Business Administration and ultimately a Master of Engineering degree in Telecommunications Engineering and Design. While moving up the telecommunications ladder, he met his wife Stevie while working for ATT in Cincinnati.
In addition to an amazing career, Steve has been active in his local community… serving as a City Commissioner, serving on the Planning and Zoning Board in Columbine Valley, Colorado, and being on the Grounds Committee at Columbine Country Club for three years.
His contributions to his profession include being elected to the National Board of Directors representing members of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and being a panelist for the IT Summit in Cannes, France. He is also a voting member of the Television Academy of the Arts and Sciences (Emmys).
Since retiring from Charter Communications and moving to Sun Lakes, Steve has involved himself in our community by being a member of the Master Planning Committee in IronOaks, serving on the MOGA board and attending most of the IronOaks board meetings. We suspect the latter will continue… since he is a newly-elected board member and vice president.
Steve recently won the Duffer’s Golf Championship in Ironwood and plays drums in his band, Recycle. You might catch him playing at the Open Mic Night at Poolside.
His desire is to do his part to help IronOaks move forward by supporting those of us who live here today and preparing for the next generation of homeowners.
We congratulate Steve on his recent election and thank him for being willing to serve!
