Sun Lakes Republican Club to meet May 8

Carolyn McCorkle

The Sun Lakes Republican Club will feature “Decision 2018” with U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Kelli Ward and “State of the State” with Speaker of the Arizona House J.D. Mesnard at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Arizona Room of the Sun Lakes Country Club, 25601 S. Sun Lakes Blvd., Sun Lakes, AZ 85248. The public is invited and encouraged to join us!

Dr. Kelli Ward is a candidate for the U.S. Senate. She will review her experience and explain her principles and proposed policies, followed by a question and answer session with the audience.

Dr. Ward entered politics in 2012 when she ran and won a seat in the Arizona State Senate. While serving two terms in office, she continued to practice medicine in the emergency departments in Lake Havasu City and Kingman, Arizona. During her three years serving in the state legislature, Dr. Ward established a track record of passing legislation that supported small businesses, preserved the Second Amendment, decreased the size of government, fought the opioid crisis, protected vulnerable Arizona students and increased school choice. Dr. Ward believes in defending our natural rights of life, liberty and property identified in the Declaration of Independence and enshrined in our Constitution.

Arizona Speaker of the House J.D. Mesnard currently represents our Legislative District 17 and is a candidate for the State Senate. He will provide an update on the accomplishments and challenges of the 2018 legislative session. In his first term, J.D. introduced landmark job-creation legislation that was signed into law, for which he was named “Representative of the Year” by business leaders. He was also Chairman of the prestigious House Commerce Committee. Some bills that he introduced and that are now law include: Directed more educational dollars into classrooms, created the Address Confidentiality Program for survivors of domestic violence and sexual offenses, outlawed a despicable practice known commonly as “revenge porn,” which is where spiteful ex boyfriends or girlfriends post explicit documents of their former partner on to sites such as https://www.watchmygf.adult/ as an act of revenge. Other acts include helping employees who are owed wages and promoted veteran-friendly college campuses. Speaker Mesnard also received the Open Government Leader of the Year award for legislation geared towards making government more transparent.

We are also delighted to introduce our friends to the mission of Turning Point USA. As a board member representing Turning Point USA at Arizona State University, Elyse Cervantes will inspire us with an update on what is taking place with the “next generation.”

Turning Point USA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded on June 5, 2012, by Charlie Kirk. The organization’s mission is to identify, educate and train students to promote the principles of fiscal responsibility, free markets and limited government. It is a non-partisan organization primarily focused around spreading the message of free enterprise and capitalism as a force for good. One recent Turning Point-hosted event at Arizona State University was a “Millennium Moment” debate about capitalism and socialism with 500 students in attendance.
