As April began, the weather improved, giving us the promise of an exciting month of golfing activities ahead.
On the weekend of April 6 and 7, the annual John Dobson Memorial Member-Guest Tournament was held. A total of 60 teams competed for the top prizes and bragging rights. On Saturday, the teams competed in a two-man scramble format for nine holes and an alternate shot format for the other nine. That was followed by a luncheon that included wives at the clubhouse.
On Sunday, the first nine was a select-a-drive format followed by a best ball for the back nine. That, too, was followed by a luncheon, including wives for the announcements and presentation to winners. The first-place team was Mike Pasternak and Al Shaffer with a score of 129. The second-place team was comprised of Arnie Bannerman and Jim Werlinger, followed by Jim Wedeward and Ron Hellman in third place. Congratulations to all the winners.
On April 13, Palo Verde hosted the second half of the Home and Home with SunBird. First place was taken by Adrian Barber, Arnie Bannerman, Richard Tiffany and Scott Moore. Second place was won by Ed Johnson, Dan Eisenzimmer, Glen Ketchum and Michael Butler. Two teams tied for third place. They were Gary Zahnow, Stan Gross, Jim Seaman and Mel Terechenok with Bob Rouleau, Jim Cloud, Gary Hall and Dan Moran.
On April 20 and 27, the annual two-round match play tournament was played. Match play is a different format than what we are accustomed to playing. With match play, a golfer can have a “blow-up” hole and still be in the competition. The winners for each of the six flights included Mike Lorimer for the first flight, Jim Wedeward for the second flight, either Ron Cox or Vaughn Torgersen for the third flight, Jim Mottern for the fourth flight, Jim Roberts (yes!) for the fifth flight and Al Mattern for the sixth flight.
As the month ended, temperatures were going up, and the number of golfers was reducing as snowbirds were leaving for cooler climes. For those of us who stay over the summer, we look forward to upcoming golfing activities. Stay cool and drink lots of water.
