October is National Kitchen and Bath Month, coinciding when people start anticipating holiday gatherings and what is needed to facilitate entertaining more easily, including the escape to a spa-like bathroom to relax and rejuvenate! Houzz, an online site about home remodeling and design, recently published their 2022 Bathroom Trends Study of homeowners who have or were doing an en suite bathroom remodeling project. The top trigger reported by 48% of the 2,570 respondents to do their project was the desire to get rid of their bathroom’s outdated style. These are the most popular features that are trending in bathroom remodeling:
* 87% updated the style of the bathroom, 25% of them choosing transitional style, replacing faucets, flooring, wall finishes, lighting fixtures, and sinks for a cohesive look.
* 91% chose tile for their shower walls and flooring, with ceramic or porcelain being used the most. 27% included heated flooring.
* 84% upgraded their shower (52% included a rainfall shower head), 24% removed the bathtub, and 78% of them then made the shower bigger.
* 76% upgraded their vanity, making it the focal point, with 61% choosing custom or semi-custom cabinetry, specifying bar pulls. 82% wanted soft-close drawers, and 30% wanted built-in electrical outlets and drawer organizers. 51% used Shaker-style doors. The cabinetry colors selected were 32% white, 30% wood, and 14% gray, with 58% wanting a matte finish.
* 70% chose undermount sinks.
* 60% chose to mount the vanity off the floor.
* White is the dominant color of choice in the bathroom, with 59% countertops, 49% shower walls, 37% other walls being white.
* 45% change the layout of the bathroom, 41% modifying the walls.
* 40% chose engineered quartz for the countertops, followed by quartzite and marble (19%, 18%).
* 35% wanted to add plants to create a calming environment for better air quality.
* The most popular metal finishes were brushed nickel (32%) and black (21%).
Homeowners wanted their bathroom design to provide the experience of relaxation in their bathrooms with a sense of cleanliness (78%), lack of clutter (65%), with a soaker tub or improved ventilation to take longer showers (58%), having natural light (49%), and dimmable lights (45%). Knowing what is popular can you help you make informed decisions on what to include for your enjoyment to make the design current and how to prioritize your remodeling budget to get the most return in the future when it is time to sell your home.
