The fall sessions for both the Lakes and Sun Divisions “kicked off” (oops, that’s a football term, not softball!) on Oct. 29 and will continue through Dec. 20, with each of our eight teams playing an 18-game schedule (nine doubleheaders). This session’s managers in the Lakes Division are Gary Hillabolt, Dennis Kennedy, Dave Kratz, and Larry Maggard. The Sun Division managers are Ron Carmichael, Mike Gloyd, Marty Hobby, and Kim Whitney. Thanks for stepping up, guys!
After a long, hot summer, opening day is like a holiday for softball players (maybe something like Christmas morning for a six-year-old?). Although nearly half of our guys played in our summer league, it’s now back to all hands on deck. Opening day isn’t just another game—there’s that little extra excitement and a faster beating of the heart. And there’s those magical words of “Play Ball!”
This is the start of the 35th year of league play for Sun Lakes Senior Softball. Even though our program was founded in 1985 by Jack Lander, we didn’t have enough guys for a league until 1990. From 1985 to 1989, we had only one or two travel teams that played other senior teams throughout the Phoenix area. Then by 1990, we had enough players to form four teams and a real league. And we’ve been growing ever since, now with eight teams, a recreational program, and a ladies team.
We welcome two new banner advertisers at the Field of Dreams. Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant and Catering of Chandler and TerraWealth Financial Advisors of Sun Lakes are our new supporters. There are links to their websites and to all our other advertisers and team sponsors on the Sponsors page at www.sunlakessoftball.com. The website also includes other softball news, schedules, statistics, and lots of other information. Check it out.
We were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Billy Kee’s wife Beverly. They were married for over 43 years. Beverly was often at the Field of Dreams cheering on Billy and his teammates. She will be missed. Our condolences to Billy and his family.
