Honoring God with Our Whole Selves

Reverend Jennifer Lambert

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

When Paul wrote these words to the church in Corinth, he was reminding them of a profound truth: Our bodies are not just physical vessels but sacred places where God’s Spirit dwells. This idea challenges us to rethink how we care for ourselves—not only physically, but also mentally and spiritually.

At Sun Lakes United Methodist Church, we recognize that wellness is more than just a personal goal—it’s a sacred responsibility and a way to honor God. That’s why our Abide ministry is dedicated to promoting wellness and connection through Christ-centered care. We believe that tending to our health—mind, body, and spirit—enables us to live more fully into the calling God has placed on our lives.

Our Abide ministry offers a variety of opportunities to support holistic well-being. For those looking to strengthen their bodies, Strength Classes with Ila Mackerman meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m., providing a welcoming space to build physical resilience. If you’re seeking gentle movement and relaxation, Chair Yoga with Becky Paschal-Snyder meets on Thursdays at 9 a.m., helping participants improve flexibility, balance, and peace of mind.

Beyond physical health, Sun Lakes United Methodist Church is also committed to emotional and spiritual well-being through numerous support groups. Polly Smith, our Certified Health Minister, provides grief support, advocacy, and more. Whether facing grief, navigating caregiving, or simply seeking deeper connection, these groups provide a space for encouragement, prayer, and shared wisdom.

And while movement and support groups are essential, science is now affirming what we in the church have known all along: being part of a faith community is good for your health. Research has shown that regular worship attendance and faith-based relationships contribute to lower stress, increased life satisfaction, and even improved longevity. Gathering in worship, singing together, praying for one another, and engaging in meaningful fellowship strengthens not just our spirits, but our minds and bodies as well.

Caring for ourselves isn’t just about self-improvement—it’s about honoring the life we’ve been given and recognizing that our well-being is deeply connected to our faith. Small choices—moving more, learning something new, deepening our spiritual life—can have a profound impact on our overall health and sense of purpose.

As we continue to cultivate a culture of whole-person wellness, we invite you to consider: How am I honoring the gift of my mind, body, and spirit? Through intentional care and connection, we not only nurture ourselves—we create space for God’s presence to renew and strengthen us each day.

Sun Lakes United Methodist Church, located at 9248 E. Riggs Road, worships at 9 a.m. on Sundays.
