The vibrant energy of Sun Lakes is perhaps best exemplified by the enthusiasm radiating from its residents, and the two newest silversmithing instructors at the club are shining examples. Meet Lisa Sherburne and Shana Nyberg, the dynamic duo who have enriched the IronOaks community since their families both settled here five years ago.

Lisa rediscovered her passion for silversmithing after retirement, while Shana’s fascination with lapidary (the art of polishing stones) blossomed to the point where she needed a creative outlet for her growing collection of beautifully finished cabochons. This shared love for crafting with their hands naturally led them to instructing others.

“The club is a treasure trove! It has all the tools and equipment you could possibly need, wonderful people, and endless opportunities to learn and create,” enthuses Lisa.

When asked about their favorite aspects of silversmithing to create or teach, Shana eagerly showcases her impressive collection of handcrafted chains—necklaces and bracelets featuring a diverse array of intricate link designs. Lisa’s response is equally enthusiastic: “All of it! The creative possibilities are truly endless, and there’s such a deep satisfaction in making something beautiful with your own hands.”

Intrigued by the connection between the silver and the stones, I asked, “Do you have a personal favorite stone you enjoy working with in your silver pieces?” Lisa mused, “There are so many breathtaking stones, it’s truly difficult to choose just one! Each gem seems to spark a unique design, and that’s what keeps the creative process so exciting.” Shana, however, confessed to having a long list of favorites, including the captivating play of color in opal, the rich blues of turquoise and lapis, the swirling patterns of pietersite, and the orbicular beauty of ocean jasper, to name just a few.

Lisa and Shana offer consistent instruction through their typically six-week sessions, held twice a week for three hours each, year-round. “We intentionally keep our Introduction to Silver (Silver 1) classes small, usually between four and six students, so that everyone receives ample, hands-on help and personalized attention,” Lisa explains.

When the conversation turned to the biggest challenge in teaching the Silver 101 class, Shana and Lisa were in unison: “Getting students comfortable with the torch! It can seem intimidating at first, but once they overcome that initial apprehension and get the hang of it, they are amazed by the beautiful pieces they can create.” Beyond mastering the torch, they also emphasize the significant role patience plays in silversmithing. “It’s definitely not a craft you can rush,” they both agree.

It’s this blend of skilled guidance and patient encouragement from these dedicated volunteer instructors that keeps students returning to hone their craft. Beginners proudly display their first creations (often an onyx pendant and ring), tangible testaments to their newfound skills. “They absolutely love how hands-on the class is and the incredible feeling of leaving with a real, wearable piece they crafted themselves. It’s truly empowering,” Lisa says with a warm smile. Their genuine passion is clearly infectious.

Outside of their engaging classes, Shana enjoys games of Mah Jongg and bunco, as well as swimming with her husband Brock. Lisa finds joy in traveling and hiking with her husband Brad, capturing the beauty of her journeys through photography.

The monthly Sun Lakes Rock, Gem, Silver, Glass & Creative Crafts Club meetings are on hiatus until October; however, classes continue year-round. Please visit our website www.slrgs.com to inquire about class schedules and more.
